It uses simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand and is made in minutes. Tempeh is a lesser known vegan protein made from soybeans. It is versatile and will go well on any vegan lunch or dinner. It's also just a great snack because these crispy, golden, and flavorful bites of tempeh are the best! This is my favorite simple tempeh recipe and it's so delicious!
What is tempeh?
Tempeh is a vegan protein made from cooked and fermented soybeans. Tempeh is commonly used around the world as a protein and meat substitute, especially in Asia! Tempeh contains a ton of plant-based protein, fiber, and is considered very nutritious. Like tofu, it soaks up the flavors of whatever you marinate it in, so as long as you prepare it correctly - it'll be delicious! Because tempeh (and all soy products) can be genetically modified, we recommend purchasing certified organic and non GMO.
Simple Tempeh Marinade Ingredients
- Olive Oil - We use olive oil to coat the baking sheet before placing the tempeh on top and baking in the oven. The olive oil gives the tempeh more flavor and helps it get crispy when baking. Avocado oil will also work.
- Maple Syrup - Maple syrup compliments the coconut aminos in this delicious tempeh marinade.
- Coconut Aminos or Soy Sauce - Coconut aminos or low sodium soy sauce flavor the tempeh perfectly.
- Lemon Juice - Helps the flavors of the marinade penetrate the tempeh more.
- Spices - Garlic powder is all you need but feel free to season with salt and pepper before baking the tempeh as well!
- Tempeh - I use the brand LightLife Tempeh - it has a firm texture, stays in tact while cooking, tastes delicious, and is USDA Certified Organic and Non GMO Certified!
